Technical Difficulties

Living in the information age certainly has it’s advantages! I can check the weather before I get out of bed, find out the news for the day and see that my friend from high schools’ daughter lost a tooth! I use technology so much that when it’s gone or limited I start to panic! Sunday at church we had a lesson about patience. I had found a really cute color page for the kids to do. It was on Google, How COVID has affected us

Advice for Graduates and Ourselves

I found a verse a few years ago while looking for a good “graduation verse”. It is still my favorite piece of advice to give a graduate. It’s found in Matthew 10:16.  It says, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.  Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent a doves.”  What great advice to give a child that you love as they go out into the big bad world. We want them to be wise and on guard, like How COVID has affected us
Resetting Influence

Influence

We are beginning a sermon series entitled influencers. When I hear the word influencers I think of trend setters, people that society looks at to know what is the latest and greatest gadget etc. If I find a product I love, I shout it’s praises to the rooftops. If I eat at a delicious restaurant I give them a great review. If you think about it, we are all influencers to those around us…but what are we telling them about? How COVID has affected us
Kids on Bus

Lord Willing

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to take 16 of our 4th and 5th grade students on an overnight trip to Grand Rapids. Normally we go to Chicago for the  CIY Superstart! Conference. We didn’t get to go last year because of Covid and they cancelled the in person conference this year. Thankfully they did a virtual conference so we were able to still have it with some improvisations.  If anyone is wondering how this pandemic has changed How COVID has affected us
Tug of War E-news article

Tug of War

Are you a do-er? A person who jumps right in to solve a problem? While there are many times in the Bible that we are prompted to be men and women of action, there are plenty that say the opposite. So how do we determine when we should act and when we should be patient? Recently I was talking to someone about how I am a natural fixer. If there is a problem or some distress I feel compelled to How COVID has affected us

Pure Peace

When is the last time you were in absolute silence? The world today is full of noise. From 24 hour news, to internet at our fingertips, it is hard to find a moment of pure, unpolluted silence. I’m going to challenge all of you to spend an hour in silence with God this week. Thursday at Octane I will be doing that with our 4th and 5th graders. Imagine how much easier this exercise will be for you! I am How COVID has affected us
Frozen Pipes

Frozen Pipes

With the cold weather in the winter months, comes many challenges for us northern Michigan dwellers….icy roads, lack of sunshine, and freezing temperatures. One of the side effects of these freezing temperatures is frozen pipes. Pipes freeze when the temperature is too cold, and if you’ve ever had it happen to you, you know the signs.  You turn on your faucet expecting to see the water pour out as usual, and it starts to hesitate and then you get a How COVID has affected us

Childlike

Last week was my first full week with kids. I had them Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday. My passion for my job was rekindled and I was reminded why Jesus told us to become more like children. I taught them 3 different lessons from the Bible. They taught me several.  On Sunday, I taught on the unforgiving servant. It was a great reminder about how because Jesus first forgave us, that we too must forgive others. Later on in the week How COVID has affected us

Where Do You Find Hope?

What brings you hope? Hope is something that is personal yet can also be universal. Some items that bring you hope could cause the next person anxiety. For example, if you finally decided to take charge of your finances, balancing your checkbook could be a source of hope and stability. While those who are struggling with financial discipline could find the sight of a checkbook and an anxiety-inducing tool.    The same goes for the bathroom scale. Battling Satan’s Isolation Game

I recently finished up a bible study that was one of the best ones I’ve done. It was called “Get out of your head” by Jennie Allen. It talks about how we can have a thought and it just spirals out of control and we are left feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and insignificant. The study was based in Philippians and followed the journey of Paul. It was a very insightful and timely study. There is so much stress in the world right How COVID has affected us
