Holiday
It may be Friday, but Sunday is Coming
Easter Sunday will be here in a few short days. Christians all over the world will celebrate our Savior’s victory over sin and death. The entire Christian faith is centered on Jesus’ raising from the dead. However, we rarely think of Easter without first being reminded of Good Friday. Of course, there is nothing “good” about it since that’s the day we remember Jesus nailed to the Jewish cross and crucified. There seems to be a theme that emerges from these two events – How COVID has affected us
Happy Greatest Commandment Day!
It’s Valentine’s Day, so of course I need to write my article about love. In 1 John 4:8, it says that “God is love.” It says that if you don’t love you don’t know God. That seems pretty straightforward. Jesus said that people will know we are his disciples by how we love one another (John 13:35). Jesus also said, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friend” (John 15:13). When asked about what the greatest commandment was, Jesus answered, “Love How COVID has affected us
Beauty in the Ashes
I went to the hospital to see someone today. As I was going into the elevator, a guy was facing me that had a cross drawn on his forehead. The cross was drawn using ash. It then, of course, dawned on me that today was Ash Wednesday. As I understand it, in the eighth century the practice of Ash Wednesday started and two centuries later the addition of the cross drawn with ashes was added.Ash Wednesday starts a time of How COVID has affected us
Of Candy and Toothaches
Every Halloween I have to stop and ask myself whether we should, as a church, be promoting, encouraging, and participating in this holiday. Let’s face it, when you think about Halloween the mind quickly goes to scary, witches, ghosts, and goblins. I know it’s fun and there are many other costumes that have nothing to do with scary themes. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:22-23, “To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all How COVID has affected us
‘Merica: God’s Country?
July 4th is coming up and we all know what that means, right? American flags will come out of the closet. Churches will gear up for their independence day services. Patriotic songs like “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land” will be blasted over the radio. OH, and let’s not forget the most important part…FIREWORKS! In all the hustle and bustle going on during this time of year, we can lose sight of where our true patriotism should lie. Let me How COVID has affected us
Celebrate
Celebration! This weekend our country celebrates the declaration of independence from Britain in July 4, 1776. In addition to our freedom, we have much to celebrate as Americans. What do we have to celebrate as Christians? Let’s take a quick look at scripture. There are Biblical reasons for celebration. Celebrate when others celebrate Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Celebrate when good things happen to your neighbors, family, and friends. Lift them up with encouraging words. Give them a gift. Throw a party! Just celebrate with others who How COVID has affected us
Unspeakable Joy
So what are the things that overshadow the true meaning of Christmas for you? As a kid, I am sure the gifts under the tree started to overshadow Jesus at times. The rush of getting things purchased and wrapped and making Christmas plans and writing Christmas letters, all at times seem to overshadow the joy and excitement we should have for the Christ child being born into this world. Herod allowed power to overshadow the birth of Jesus by making How COVID has affected us
New Year’s Eve Lock-in
The High School / Middle School New Year’s Eve Lock-in is history now! About 30 young people and a dozen very committed adults spent the entire night at the church building celebrating the coming of 2018! There were games, prizes, and lots of wonderful food all night long! Thanks to everyone who made this event possible!
