Today is May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day!! If you know me, it didn’t take you long to find out I’m a Star Wars nerd. So needless today say, today will be all about Star Wars. A common phrase spoken in almost every Star Wars movie is “May the force be with you”. It was a phrase individuals would say to one another to wish good luck or goodwill. It was often said as they parted ways or in the face of an impending challenge.
This force is a key underlining element that runs through the heart of the Star Wars universe. As Obi-Wan Kenobi says in A New Hope, “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds eerily similar to the Holy Spirit. Master Yoda states in The Empire Strikes Back, “ Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? And well you should not… for my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it… makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us… and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you. Here, between you, me… the tree, the rock… everywhere. Yes… even between the land and the ship”. This can also remind us of our walk with Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Just as the Force gives a Jedi power to do incredible things, the Holy Spiritempowers us to be bold in our faith while guiding our walk with Jesus. Just as the Force is everywhere, the Holy Spirit is everywhere, living inside of every believer. As the Force binds the galaxy together, so too does God hold all things together (Col. 1:17). As Christians, our strength and power doesn’t come from ourselves, others, or the Force from a movie; we have a much more powerful ally living inside us, the Spirit of God. So, as we part ways to face this world, with all its trials and temptations, I have but one last thing to say: May the Spirit be with you.
