What’s Next?

What's Next - Kalkaska Church of Christ Article

Do you ever sit around and think about what’s next? I have a list in my head of everything that is next. I have things that I’m preparing for work, Things that need to be done for my family, things that I’m looking forward to with friends, and upcoming obligations. They are all swirling around inside of my head. Sometimes it helps to write them out, sometimes it helps to put them on a physical calendar…but they are still up there swirling around. And I am always saying, “as soon as this is done, I’ll start on that.” It really does seem to be a never-ending list.

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I did a big giant “time out” to all of that. We went away and turned off our phones. There was very little “what’s next” that week. We were able to focus on each other and not worry about everything in our lives that other people depend on us for. We were able to just be. And friends…It was wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed that time. It was precious. As soon as we turned our phones back on we were bombarded with life, work, obligations, kids, and people that needed us…but they all survived without us for a week. It was a great lesson for me. The world won’t end because I don’t answer a text right away. Life will go on.

I’ve really reflected a lot this year on the BIG what’s next. Heaven. I have a friend dealing with terminal brain cancer and for the first time in my life, I’ve thought about my own mortality. Of course, I know that I won’t be here forever but I felt that that was further down on my list of what’s next. I have been reading and studying and praying about Heaven fervently this year. I have to tell you…it sounds unimaginably wonderful. It sounds like the most amazing respite. It sounds like the warmest kind of peace and love. And I can’t wait for the ultimate next!

This world is ugly. It’s filled with sin. It’s filled with hurting people. I urge you to make sure that your next is Heaven and not Hell. I’m praying for all of you this week. Don’t let the world get you down. Hang on for what’s next!
