I heard a new term this week. It’s called “ghostworking.” Now, when I describe it for you, you are probably going to have someone come to mind from your past who definitely was ghostworking. It is described as someone who walks around the office carrying a notebook, looking busy, while being very unproductive, if productive at all. You know that person, don’t you? The one you end up doing his or her work for them because they don’t get it done, and it reflects on you.

If there is something I never want to be accused or convicted of, it is being a “ghost Christian.” I don’t ever want to be someone who carries the name of Jesus yet is unproductive in my Christian life. Paul tells us in 2 Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.” We are called to strive to be like Jesus. That is a continuous battle and journey.
This sounds like a good time to remind everyone of our Vision and Mission. Our vision is Destination Jesus. We want everyone to be on that journey to be like Jesus first and foremost. And for those who have surrendered to Jesus, we want to challenge them to become like Jesus. He is our destination. To do this, we Believe in Jesus as Lord, Belong to Christian community, and Become like Jesus in how we love God and love others.
The core values we developed are Unceasing Prayer, Unchanging Truth, Uncommon Unity, Unrivaled Hope, and Unrelenting Compassion. When you think about those core values, which one sticks out as one you need to stop “ghost” doing and actually put into practice and grow in?
I think prayer and Bible reading are the two lowest hanging fruits. Those two you can do during your day whenever you carve out 30 minutes. Being united in community and showing compassion by serving can be more time consuming and less convenient. But, I don’t think we’ve ever been called to a convenient life.
The only ghost I want to be accused of having as a part of my life is the Holy Ghost. See what I did there? Let’s be productive Christ followers, looking for ways to grow to be like Him and ways to serve Him, and ways to share Him.
