Tonight, I’m kicking off a new series with the youth on ‘Following Jesus’. Following Jesus is not simply about believing certain truths, it’s about living a transformed life. When Jesus called His first disciples, He didn’t hand them a list of rules or a detailed plan. He gave a simple invitation: “Follow Me”. That same invitation is extended to us today.
To follow Jesus means to walk in relationship with Him daily. It is a journey shaped by trust, surrender, and obedience. It involves learning His ways, listening for His voice, and allowing His teachings to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. This kind of life doesn’t happen instantly, it grows over time as we continue to seek Him.
In a fast-paced and often overwhelming world, following Jesus requires intentional choices. It means slowing down to spend time in prayer, opening Scripture with a willing heart, and choosing faith even when circumstances are uncertain. It also means letting go of things that pull us away from Him, whether distractions, fears, or habits that hinder our walk.
Jesus showed us that following Him is rooted in love. We are called to love God wholeheartedly and to love others selflessly. This love is not always easy, but it is powerful. It reaches across differences, extends grace where it’s undeserved, and reflects the heart of Christ to those around us. When we love as He loves, we become living examples of His presence in the world.
Following Jesus also means serving others with humility. He modeled a life of service; meeting needs, showing compassion, and lifting up those who were overlooked. As His followers, we are invited to do the same. Whether through small acts of kindness or larger steps of faith, every act of service becomes an expression of His love.
There will be challenges along the way. Following Jesus does not mean a life free from difficulty. In fact, it often requires courage, perseverance, and trust in God’s promises. Yet we are never alone. Jesus walks with us, strengthens us, and reminds us that every step taken in faith has purpose.
As we reflect on what it means to follow Jesus, consider these questions:
- Where is He leading you right now?
- What might He be asking you to trust Him with?
- How can you reflect His love in your daily interactions?
Following Jesus is a lifelong journey, one that shapes us, challenges us, and fills us with hope. Together, as a community of believers, we can encourage one another to keep moving forward, growing in faith, deepening in love, and becoming more like Christ each day.
