When was the last time you took a “selfie?” Here are some “selfie” statistics:
- 92 million selfies are taken every day.
- Individuals spend 54 hours a year (or 7 minutes a day) taking selfies.
- The average “selfie-taker” is 24 years old.
- Women take 1.5 times more selfies than men.
- A full 95% of youth have taken selfies, compared to 63% of those aged 35–54 and only 44% of people over 55.
- Roughly 33% of pictures snapped by 18 to 24-year-olds are self-portraits.
- Millennials are forecast to capture around 25,700 selfies over their lifetime.
I am someone who enjoys a picture much more when someone I know is in the picture. I want to see what they are doing, not necessarily where they are. In a meeting just today, one of our staff members mentioned their daughter noticed how many “worship” songs we sing are about us and what God will do for us. That sounds somewhat like a musical selfie.
I think one of the snares we have in this world, and even among Christians, is the idea that life is about us and what we get out of it.
How about these Scriptures:
Psalm 75:1 We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds.
Deuteronomy 10:21 He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen.
1 Chronicles 16:23-25 Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations,
His marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.
When it comes to pictures, enjoy sharing them and telling the story. When it comes to worship and praise, let’s take the camera off our lives and turn it around, focusing the lens of our hearts onto the creator of life.
