Long Distance

Long Distance

How many of you remember long-distance calls? As a child, we had a house phone. One phone in the entire house that we all had to share. As a teen, I got a phone in my bedroom! It was still on a shared line with the rest of the house, but I thought I was super cool! I would talk on the phone with my friends for HOURS.

When I was a senior in High School, I started dating a cute boy from Alba. (Spoiler alert…His Name was Nick Blasko!) About a month into our relationship, a funny thing happened. The phone bill came in the mail. BOTH of our dad’s were NOT happy! I didn’t realize how expensive long distance phone calls were. We were told to write letters, or we were paying for our portion of the phone bill. I dreaded every month when the bill would show up, and my parents would highlight my phone calls, and add up the bill. We continued to call each other, despite the cost, because, well, we were in love!

I recently talked to the kids at church about calling people that live far away, that they don’t see often. While long distance is a thing of the past, most elementary kids don’t have access to a phone all of the time, so they did grasp that concept. The concept of wanting or needing to talk to someone, and not being able to.

Most of us have a go to person that we share all of our ups and downs with. If you are really lucky, you have several people. But we all ALWAYS have God. We don’t have to pick up a phone. We don’t need to send an email, and we don’t have to schedule a time to chat. We don’t even have to pay long distance, yet I am guilty of not going to God first. 1 Peter 5:7 says, Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. He really does!

I shared with the kids that we can talk to God anytime we want. While we are struggling, while we are happy, and when we need his help. He cares about all of our tiny details and is capable to carry our burdens. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

The next time you have exciting news, or need help with something big, Don’t reach for the phone. Drop to your knees and call on your best friend!
